Yummy Portuguese croquettes.

Outwardly they look similar to some finger food in other cuisines (e.g. empanadas from the Philippines, or pastel from Indonesia) but it’s a bit different. The outward skin reminds me of Dutch croquettes, but thinner.

After checking SP Original on Google Maps Business, and their website, I travelled specifically there on the 19th December for lunch, as my Brazilian friend eats and recommends Portuguese croquettes. However, upon arrival, I found an A4 printed note on the door (see attached photo) stating "no walk ins ... pickup only for pre-orders" (the latter was also on the buzzer).

As a small business owner myself, I know that updating Google Maps Business and my website homepage takes litterally minutes. I invite the public through these portals to purchase from my premises, so I have a responsibilty to inform them when I'm open and when I'm not. I expect the same of others.

The best Rissoles I’ve ever had! We love the pastel de bacalhau, everything is fresh and the flavours are amazing.
I’ll definitely come back!

If you like Portuguese croquetas de bacalao (cod croquettes) then you should not miss croquettes from @sp_originals . I have had so many cod croquettes in the past and this one is a must! I ordered Seafood Sample box yesterday evening and Sofia delivered to me this morning. They are well packed and still hot and crispy outside but so soft and tasty inside. I reheat them in the oven for few minutes. The croquettes are not oily at all. The amount of cod fish and potato just perfect!! The flavour is just right which is not too salty. I can’t stop eating them! 😄 The prawn rissols are so delicious too! I like the falvour of garlic in the prawn white sauce. Sofia is also kindly gave me a lunch box which is so cute! ❤️. Thank you!!

I've ordered from SP Originals a few times and even sample boxes to gift people. Each time they are delivered fresh and still hot. The prawn is a family favourite, but you can't go wrong with any of their flavours! The leftovers heat up great in the air fryer!

SP Originals opened today on Liverpool Road in Burwood. This Portuguese bakery cafe sees Sofia Pestana working from her grandmother’s recipe to produce Portuguese croquettes and pastries. This bricks and mortar store started out as a home-based business during COVID-19 and proved successful enough to open a commercial kitchen, with a public-facing front of house. Today it’s packed with members of the Australian-Portuguese community. “There’s a new Portuguese place that’s opened up, so I came to support my community,” one woman explains.

Pão de Deus ($5) is the star of the sweets. This Portuguese ‘bread of god’ is made with coconut, and eggy and soft under a dusting of icing sugar. It beats the Portuguese tart ($5) that looked and tasted the part with crisp pastry and a vanilla-heavy custard, but wasn’t quite set enough. A small sample box ($30/24) allows you to eat your way through the range of croquettes, and it’s hard to pick a favourite. Minced mild chorizo scrubs up well on a crescent shaped croquette with scalloped edges. The green-flecked cod or bacalao has a nice balance between pungent fish and potato, while prawn has a good creamy garlic sauce base. Even the vegetarian version is exciting, dressed up with turmeric, carrot, green peas and mild spices.

Lovely little place for traditional Portuguese food. Clean quiet and cool place. We for the first time had the Croquette and they were delicious. Their tarts and coffee aren't bad either.

Eat in, take away or take the frozen to cook at home.
